Procedure
- Weigh 5g of coffee powder.
- Place it in beaker. Add 50 ml of deionised
water and 4g anhydrous Na2CO3. Gently boil the
content for 10 minutes with one boiling chip.
- Transfer it to separatory funnel.
- Add 5 ml of dichloromethane (wear gloves).
Stopper the funnel and grab
the neck of the funnel with one hand, holding the stopper into the neck of the funnel. With other
hand, grasp the stopcock in such a way that can turn the plug in the
barrel to open and close the stopcock.
- Invert the funnel so that the liquid does not in contact with
stopcock. Open the stopcock to release any built in pressure and then
close the stopcock.
- Shake the funnel a little and open the stopcock again to release
any built in pressure.
- Close the stopcock and shake the funnel again.
- Allow the content of the funnel to settle. There should be two distinct
layers. Gently swirling the layer if there is emulsion.
- Drain the lower (dichloromethane) into conical flask without
including any upper aqueous layer.
